Adoption: A Brave Choice, Not a Last Resort
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear at Parkridge Pregnancy Clinic is the idea that choosing adoption means “giving up a baby” or that it’s the same as a child going into foster care. This simply isn’t true.
When a woman chooses to place her baby for adoption, especially through infant adoption, she is not losing control. In fact, she remains in the driver’s seat every step of the way. Adoption is a planned and intentional decision, and there are several ways it can look, depending on what the birth mother wants.
Three Types of Infant Adoption
1. Open Adoption
Open adoption allows for direct contact between the birth parents and the adoptive family. This might include sharing names, phone numbers, or even spending time together throughout the years. For many women, this brings peace of mind—knowing how their child is doing and building a relationship with the adoptive family. Each open adoption looks different and is tailored to the comfort level of everyone involved.
2. Semi-Open Adoption
This option creates a balance between openness and privacy. Communication is often handled through an adoption agency or lawyer, and contact might include pictures, letters, or occasional updates. The birth mother decides how much or how little contact she wants, and this plan can change over time.
3. Closed Adoption
In a closed adoption, there is no exchange of identifying information, and no contact between the birth family and the adoptive family. All records are sealed. This arrangement works well for birth mothers who wish to have no contact with the adoptive family or baby post birth.
You are in control.
No matter what path you choose, know this: you have options, and you are not alone.
Please note: Adoption is not foster care.
Foster care often involves the state stepping in during a crisis. Adoption, on the other hand, is a proactive and deeply personal decision, made of love and hope for your baby’s future.
