What Are the Risks of Abortion?

Every medical procedure carries some level of risk, and abortion is no exception. Whether it’s medical or surgical, it’s important to understand the possible complications and how to stay safe if you’re considering this option.

At Parkridge Pregnancy Medical Clinic, we offer no-cost pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, and information on all your options. Make an appointment to learn more in a confidential setting.

Medical Abortion Risks

Medical abortion (known as the abortion pill) uses two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, to end an early pregnancy. Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone, while misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and empty through vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping.

This method is only FDA-approved through the first ten weeks of pregnancy.

The Potential Risks Include:

  • Heavy or prolonged bleeding

  • Incomplete abortion (which may require a surgical procedure)

  • Infection

  • Fever

  • Digestive system discomfort, such as an upset stomach

  • Ongoing pregnancy if the drugs do not work as intended

Women with certain medical conditions, such as blood disorders or allergies to these drugs, would not be candidates for this procedure.

There’s a long list of pre-existing health conditions and medication interactions that would rule out medical abortion as an option, so it’s essential to talk with a healthcare provider about your health history first.

Surgical Abortion Risks

Surgical abortion involves dilating the cervix and surgically removing the pregnancy using suction and surgical instruments. An abortion provider will scrape and suction out the pregnancy, and sometimes use forceps to pull out larger pieces.

It’s typically performed in a clinical or hospital setting, but still carries risks such as:

  • Uterine perforation (poking a hole in the uterus)

  • Damage to the cervix

  • Infection

  • Scar tissue forming on the uterine wall (Asherman’s syndrome)

  • Reactions to anesthesia or sedation

As a side effect, some women may also experience mild cramping and light bleeding for a few days after the procedure.

Make an Informed Choice

Before choosing abortion, it’s important to confirm your pregnancy details, such as how far along you are and whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus. An ultrasound can provide this vital information and identify complications that require different care.

At Parkridge Pregnancy Medical Clinic, we’re here to help you make a fully informed decision for your health and future.
