Inside the Clinic - Mental Health Checks

Mental Health Checks at Parkridge

The Parkridge care team includes licensed medical professionals AND licensed mental health professionals. As part of our holistic care, our counselors offer brief mental health checks. This check in is a great first step for anyone who may not be ready to commit to ongoing counseling.

Mental health checks are 10-15 minute conversations with a counselor, designed to create a safe space for you to talk about your life and what you need in this moment.

Here are 3 scenarios where a mental health check could be helpful:

  1. Ashley came to Parkridge for a pregnancy test. Her period is late, but she doesn’t really think she is pregnant. When the nurse shares with Ashley that her test result is positive, Ashley can’t hold back the tears.  The Parkridge nurse offers her mental health check with one of our counselors, and she agrees. After her mental health check, Ashley decides to schedule another counseling session as she continues to think through her pregnancy options.

  2. Kayla visited Parkridge for an STI test. During her check-in with the Parkridge nurse, Kayla opens up about a past relationship that seems to be impacting her current relationship. Kayla’s nurse suggests a mental health check with a Parkridge counselor. After a mental health check and talking through some things, Kayla says she feels a lot better. Kayla is going to have some conversations with her partner and knows she can call Parkridge if she would like to schedule counseling in the future.

  3. Isabel calls our clinic after seeing an ad for our after-abortion support group. She says she hasn’t felt like herself lately and has uncomfortable thoughts and feelings when it comes to her past abortion. She said she doesn’t feel ready to attend a group but feels like she needs some help. We suggest a mental health check with a counselor to talk through some options. Isabell doesn’t want to come in yet but decides to talk with a counselor for a mental health check by phone.
