How Does an Ultrasound Work?

When a sonographer, also known as an ultrasound technician, conducts an ultrasound, they use a medical instrument called a transducer that emits high-frequency sound waves into your body.

These sound waves bounce off tissues and bones, reflecting back towards the transducer. The transducer converts these sound waves into electrical signals, which create a digital image we can see.

If you think you might be pregnant, we offer no-cost ultrasounds and pregnancy tests at our clinic. An ultrasound is a significant first step, even if you're unsure of your pregnancy decision.

Are Ultrasounds Safe?

Yes, ultrasounds are a safe imaging technique when performed by trained professionals. These are even safer than X-rays because, rather than using radiation, they merely use sound waves.

When Should I Schedule an Ultrasound?

Anytime during pregnancy is a good time to schedule an ultrasound. An ultrasound can help you confirm the following details:

  • Pregnancy gestational age: Knowing the gestational age (how many weeks you’ve been pregnant) affects which options are available to you. For instance, the abortion pill is only FDA-approved through 10 weeks of gestational age.

  • Pregnancy viability: Up to 26% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. An ultrasound can verify that your pregnancy is still viable (developing), which can help you determine your next steps.

  • Pregnancy location: If a pregnancy is located outside your uterus, this is called an ectopic pregnancy. It can be extremely dangerous.
