What are the Different Types of Abortion?

If you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy, you may be feeling anxious or rushed to make a decision. You’re not alone, and there’s no need to decide right away. Taking time to understand your options can bring clarity and peace of mind.

There are two different types of abortion: surgical and medical. Keep reading to learn more about each type. You can also request a free of cost appointment to discuss your options with our medical team.

Surgical vs. Medical Abortion

Medical

A medical abortion, also known as a chemical abortion, is FDA-approved through 10 weeks. It involves taking two different drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol.

The first drug ends the pregnancy by blocking progesterone, and the second induces uterine contractions so that the body expels the pregnancy.

Surgical

Usually, surgical abortion is a procedure performed during the second or third trimester. Because this is a surgical procedure, it requires a visit, sometimes multiple, to a clinic. Typically, it will begin with dilating your cervix so that a suction device can be used to end the pregnancy and remove pregnancy tissue.

You will likely need a follow-up visit after an abortion procedure to ensure it was completed.

Risks of Abortion

The Mayo Clinic lists the following as potential risks of surgical abortion:

  • Perforation of the uterus

  • Damage to the cervix

  • Heavy bleeding

  • Cramping

  • Scar tissue on the uterine wall

  • Infection

The Mayo Clinic lists the following risks associated with medical abortion:

  • Incomplete abortion (may need to be followed with surgical treatment)

  • An ongoing unwanted pregnancy

  • Heavy/prolonged bleeding

  • Fever

  • Digestive system discomfort

  • Infection
